About the Art
|
|
My Work is a process of exploration and evolution. There are no particular
messages except, perhaps, to reveal my discoveries as I work my way through the process of creating a
painting. The process is really about solving puzzles. Every line, color and shape that evolves, creates
another puzzle to be solved. Things that I observe around me in nature, interesting surfaces and textures,
colors and so on, find their way into my paintings, but not in an obvious way.
I often start with an idea but the painting takes over and I go with what is
happening on the painting surface. I use layers of colors, washes, textures. I also use graphite, charcoal,
and other mark makers to make gestures and lines. All of these things accumulate, creating the essence of
time passing. Sometimes, I am surprised by the final results.

The Artist
|
|
Susan Wagner has been working professionally in printmaking and paint media
for many years. She has a degree in art from Gonzaga University and has also studied at Otis Art Institute,
the University of California, Los Angeles, Oregon School of Arts and Crafts, Pacific Northwest College of Art
and has attended varied workshops with other prominent artists. She has taught art in elementary and high
school and in various workshops. Her work can be found in many private and corporate collections in the US,
Italy and the Bahamas.
In her art, Susan tries to capture the essence, mood and emotions of her
surroundings with original use of color and line and a looseness that is spontaneous.
Susan is an enthusiastic and creative teacher. Her approach is to encourage
students to take risks and to try new ways of thinking about and creating art.
She is currently a memeber of the Watercolor Society or Oregon, Northwest
Watercolor Society, the National Society for Women in the Arts, and the International Society for Experimental
Artists.
